Andover Hampshire: A medium sized town located on the River Anton in Hampshire, Andover has a population of around 52,000 and a history going back to the times of the Saxons. Formerly important for the processing of wool, it later had an iron works (Tasker’s Iron Works), and an RAF base (RAF Andover) which has been a large employer for the town.

Andover History: First recorded as the site of a royal hunting lodge in 950AD, Andover was later mentioned in the Domesday Book (1086), when it had 6 watermills and 107 male residents.
Andover purchased a charter from Richard I in 1175, allowing it to form a merchant guild, and to elect bailiffs to run the town. The right to hold court and try local offenders was granted by Henry III in 1256, and in 1295 Andover sent its first members of parliament.
The processing of wool seems to have been the major industry at this time and a weekly market took place together with an annual fair.
Before the Reformation in the 16th century Andover had a priory and also a hospital, administered by monks. St Mary’s parish church was built in the 19th century on the site of a much older medieval church of unknown date.
Andover was granted a new charter in 1599 by Elizabeth I, its one annual fair was increased to three and the merchants guild was incorporated.
During the eighteenth century Andover became a coaching station of some significance due to its strategic position on the London to Exeter route, and at one time over thirty coached per day passed through the town.
The railway arrived in Andover in 1854, when it was linked to Basingstoke (and Salisbury), which itself was linked with London. The first gas lighting was installed in 1838 and the first piped water in 1875.
Disasters in Andover over the centuries include 2 devastating fires in 1141 and 1435, and 3 outbreaks of the plague in 1603-1605, 1625-1626, and 1636.
